Car Rental Rethymnon
Rethymnon is a town on the island of Crete in the South West of Greece with about 29,000 inhabitants in an area of 126 square kilometers. It is the third largest place of Eilandes and port for the ferries arriving from Piraeus to Heraklion and Chania. There have been first settlements in this region in the late Minoan period between 1350 and 1250 BC. Many finds from this period are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon.
A walk through the picturesque old town of Rethymnon almost reminds a cross section of its history. Several buildings with its Venetian and Turkish influences, recall today the changing rulers of the city. The beautiful minarets of four mosques in Rethymnon blend magnificently with the fortifications built by the Venetians in the 16th century, where the archaeological museum is located. The Fortezza, as the fortress is called and is located on a picturesque peninsula in the Northwest of the old town of Rethymnon, is now also considered landmarks of the city. Creates at that time in 1573 to protect against pirates, she currently serves as a venue for cultural performances.
The Neratzes mosque, which originally as Christian Church was built, but two years later, was rebuilt in 1655 after the conquest by the Turks in a Muslim House of worship is not less interesting. Today, concerts and theater performances take place here.
Of course, Rethymnon has also a beautiful beach that 13 kilometres long fairy tale stretches between the IDA Massif in the East and the White Mountains to the West. The city and other objectives in the region, can be best with a rental car to explore.
