Slovenia is a relatively small State in the South of Europe. Despite its small size, there nevertheless quite many different landscapes. While mainly the North is characterised by mighty mountains such as the Alps, the Adriatic just 47 km long dominated coast, called also Slovenian Riviera in the South. The continental climate in the mountain regions, where the Triglav is the highest point of the country at 2864 metres, provides optimum conditions for winter sports in winter. But even in summer many guided routes in a paradise-like setting for hiking and climbing invite especially as half of Slovenia with forest is covered.
Currently, about 2 million people live in Slovenia and in the capital Ljubljana, which is also the cultural centre of the country, approximately 260,000 people alone. From here many interesting destinations, such as, for example, the bizarre dripstone caves, can be perfectly achieved with a rental car. Other major cities in Slovenia are the coastal towns of Izola, Piran and Portoroz, Maribor, Koper and bled. The Slovenian Riviera is a region which is characterised especially in architecture and life style by his Italian neighbours. On the rocky coast with its Mediterranean climate numerous picturesque fishing and marinas lined up and many places are characterized by beautiful old towns.
From the middle ages to modern times Slovenia belonged for a long time with short exceptions to the territory of the Habsburgs, until it was finally annexed after the second world war of the Republic of Yugoslavia. Slovenia then declared its independence in 1991, and since 2004 to the European Union. In 2007, the euro was introduced here.
